Team DONUT
Engineering Project (2018)
Injection Molding | Mold Design | Machining
This project was the result of an 11 week design class on CAD and injection molding. Our team took the concept sketch from a 4th grader and turned it into an injection molded toy.
Toy Design
Given only the shown drawing I had to first turn the fourth grader's concept into a moldable part. I decided to go with a three part design. Two identical parts that snap together to make the donut and a third frosting part that presses into the center of the donut.
All parts were first modeled in their as molded form and then turned into a model of the mold in NX.
Mold Making
In order to make the molds tool paths were planned in NX and used to generate G Code for the HAAS SuperMini Mill. After the molds were machined, gates were opened with a file and cosmetic surfaces were polished.
Molding
After dialing in molding parameters, a pilot production run of 100 parts was produced in 440 ton Cincinnati Milacron injection molding machine.
